Rain on my Parade

November 10th, 2008

Victoria is well known for being a rainy city, and so far this fall we didn’t have much evidence of it. However, this week we got a taste of the months of gray ahead. It rained for several days straight making anything picture related much more difficult.

Last week Carolyne and I were leaving class and saw some amazing clouds, predicting an eventful sunset we raced to Mt Doug and started firing off frames. We both left cursing because although our shots were pretty, we didn’t feel that they did the real thing justice. Click here for a larger version of the picture

Then, just a couple nights later I was trying to set up a shot for jealousy in the Fairway Market’s parking lot and there was another tremendous sunset. I finished shooting in the parking lot and ran over to the school field near my house to make sure I didn’t miss it entirely. I really wish I could have been in a better place for this one, and the pictures would have taken themselves.

Anguish

November 2nd, 2008

This week’s lesson in composition and design class was about the use of light to show emotion/a story. As soon as the lesson started my mind was racing and by the end I had a full lighting set up, composition, and technical notes in my head. All I had to do was execute. Then Andrea (my composition and design teacher) gave us the assignment and each of us our own emotion we had to portray.

Crossing my fingers had no apparent effect as I received ‘jealousy’ instead of what I was hoping for… crap

I didn’t want to just let go of all that valuable time I spent in scheming in class, so I went ahead and did the picture anyways, and spent the rest of the weekend thinking of how I was going to show jealousy in a picture.

For the photo(shop) buffs out there who are thinking about how this was done its all in camera wizardry (pun intended) so you can stop going through the layer masks you think I used
