Immediate Catastrophic Effects

September 1st, 2008

I moved into my new pad yesterday, did my big startup food shop, and looked at my school yesterday. My place is pretty much perfect! Within walking/bike distance of my school, literally a stones throw from a big supermarket, and a good looking well furnished apartment. As you can tell I’m quite happy with my new place in Victoria. What on earth is Reuben doing in Victoria?

Having finished moving into my new life my mom and I went on a little Labour Day vacation to French Beach, a short drive up the west side of Vancouver Island. Walking along the shore we joked about how on previous family ventures at the ocean where it hadn’t been took kind to us; loosing cameras, getting trapped off the hiking trail with a rising tide and many other entertaining stories. Keeping this in mind we both new it wasn’t a laughing matter cause it could easily happen again, and the stakes are higher with my camera and lenses on my back.

As we walked along we came to this impassable, but picturesque inlet, so we stopped and I proceeded to take pictures while my mom caught some rays. Every five minuets or so a set of 5 or 6 waves would come in and crash lightly against the rocks on the right side. So I tossed on my new tokina 11-16 lens and jumped up to get some pictures of the water jumping into the air.

As my family’s history with the North Pacific would predict this move was not quite the most intelligent move. One wave out of the second set I photographed turned out to be a bit bigger than I anticipated.

Although you may not believe it, I managed to turn my body to shield my camera in the time it took for this last picture to be taken, and the water to land on my back. My lens had no water on it whatsoever, and the body of my camera had a couple drops of water on it, but none of the drops were in any place that threatened my camera.
