For everyone who has worked on a hiking campaign, there are evergreen questions:

How do we make this feel real?
How do we differentiate it this time?
How far do we push it getting weird?

While battling with these questions in pre-production and on set, the themes that always emerge seem to be:

Find real people who would be doing this even if our lenses weren’t.

Keep the shoot human, the more the shoot experience matches our emotional goals, the more everything lines up.

Scouting doubles or triples productivity.

Reality speaks to our audience; so plan to pivot and flow with the light, weather, and watch for the things our cast naturally are drawn do doing themselves.

When it’s supposed to look hard, make it hard. When it’s supposed to look upbeat, follow your joy.
